Vinyl only. An Innocent Records release

Original unplayed vinyl released in 1981 on Innocent Records. The instrumentation consists either of found objects or sythesizer soundscapes. The sophisticated drums are small Chinese fans made of stretched silk, hit with a toy xylophone hammer; the unsophisticated ones, telephone books and table tops.

This was the follow up to 50 Synthesizer Greats although it is very different. Throughout the 11 songs of Layer On Layer, the music and words are continually combining, falling apart and recombining forming a kind of meta-text about itself. This record was primarily concerned with uneven temperaments in text and music. Recorded somewhat secretly at night at the LaTrobe University 8-track studio, the pieces were built up track by track, with up to 30 individual layers of sound in some songs.

For a discussion of this record there is a review in Art & Text. Spring 1981 by Adrian Martin
